Change in iPhone's Hardware Design Likely?

Apple will be releasing its iPhone 4G shortly, and with this groundbreaking new technology, we are left wondering why they haven't bothered to at least redesign the new iPhone's casing. Wouldn't it seem logical to do something to the product to differentiate it from the previous lines of iPhones, if only to get more people to buy them out of jealousy for their colleagues who have the better version? Couldn't they increase their sales from this factor alone?

Pete Mortenson, a noted blogger and technology author thinks so, but he also thinks Apple has more on its hands right now than it can handle. The fact of the matter, according to Pete, is that the iPhone has become so popular that it sells itself. For Apple to go through the trouble to redesign something that is already doing well, when the company is already faced with many more interesting design problems to solve, doesn't seem worth it.

A number of new design challenges await Apple. There are rumors right now that Apple is currently working on the popularly demanded iTablet. That product alone will require the team to rethink everything we currently know about tablet PCs and how they should be designed. Some people say one of the greatest challenges of tablet PCs is the exposed screen. If it's always in tablet mode the screen can easily get scratched up whenever anyone takes the machine with them. However, if a designer creates it with a swiveling fold down screen, it won't properly be a tablet machine with the same kind of instant tablet-like functionality that one would expect.

When another new version of the iPhone hits shelves this coming June, Apple will have a better opportunity to release a new iPhone design. Right now, the iPhone 3G's release is being slightly overshadowed by the release of the highly acclaimed Palm Pre. The Pre features the first Linux-based operating system for smartphones, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, high resolution display, and the intuitive Cards application organizer. It's enough to make any smartphone enthusiast leap into the air with excitement at what can be done. And this excitement is the reason why we aren't seeing a new iPhone 3G design. When everyone's attention is somewhere else and your product line is doing well enough on it's own, there is no good reason to play around with a formula that is already extremely successful.

So it seems a redesign of the iPhone 3G just isn't in the cards for now. But that doesn't mean Apple isn't feverishly working on some new spectacular design for this coming June, along with the pile of other innovative designs they are working on. Perhaps when this summer arrives, the real news won't even be about the iPhone. Maybe the new iPhone design will be a footnote on a larger product rollout. For now, we'll just have to be patient and curious as we enjoy the new capabilities of the iPhone 3G. It is a wonderful little smartphone, after all, even if we aren't staying up all night drooling over the packaging.
