Will The iPad Strike The Right Chord?

The upcoming iPad development release will certainly give musicians something to smile about. Every iPad will, of course, come packaged with the standard music consumption apps like iTunes, but there will be plenty more offerings than just this in the future. Some have said the iPad will be a boon to independent musicians, making their startup musical careers much more easy and cheap. And we can see why. The possibilities for creating and consuming music on the device are great enough to excite even the non-musically inclined.

Just like every artist, musicians don't always get hit with inspiration at the most opportune times. Sometimes it happens while you're sitting on the bus, making your way across the country. Instead of carrying pads of paper to scribble down a few notes, musicians will have access to apps that make musical notation a breeze. Gone are the days of erasing parts of songs or notes that don't quite fit. It will soon be a mere matter of deleting and moving notes around.

Because the iPad can be placed anywhere, every musician will want to take it with him to the next practice session. Musical notation won't be static anymore. Artists and performers can have the iPad play the sequence of notes they want to practice, strumming along and testing for harmony. With access to every song ever written, old books full of musical notation will soon go the way of the dodo. Learning a new song will be a simple matter of looking it up, displaying it on the iPad, and following the notes.

iPad Apps like Garage Band and others will allow musicians to mix song ideas while they're on the road. Many of these apps will have their own touchscreen instruments that can be played as if they are the real thing. iPad app developers are already going on an overdrive with the endless sea of opportunities. This already exists on the iPhone and iPod Touch in the Drum Meister app and others. With a larger screen, we can only imagine greater possibilities. In fact, we wouldn't be surprised if some group of college kids decides forms a band using only iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touch devices to create and play their music.

But of all the points mentioned, perhaps the most important for musicians will be the iPad's very reasonable price. Let's face it. Musicians and artists are always on a tight budget. Many of them can barely afford gas money, much less a laptop or desktop computer. The iPad is positioned to be the portable computer of choice for most musicians who cannot afford anything else. It will hold all of their notes, song ideas, and maybe even a few extra music apps to boot. Instead of dropping a few thousand dollars on a laptop, they can spend $500 and save the rest for a new guitar.

No matter how you look at it, the iPad is going to make the life of a musician much easier. iPad application development will take music to new heights. There is already quite a bit of hype surrounding the iPad's potential for musical composition. We're going to put ourselves out on a limb and declare that nobody really knows how much creative potential the device holds. We might end up seeing entirely new instruments and ways of composing music that simply weren't possible before the iPad. Our ears are buzzing with excitement. What do you hear?
